whiteness is a concept essential to [[racism]], the belief in race as a reality of the world. It is important to distinguish, at the front, that when we talk about whiteness we are not talking about the fact that people hold an ethic identity or geographic origin located in Europe. Examples given would be Celtic, Germanic, and Slavic peoples. Whiteness is an identity placed on top of these ethnicities by [[colonialism]]. It is an invention of the colonial age, and it's categories are mutable, changing. For a long time in America, Irish and Italian people were not thought to be White, until cultural hegemonic forces found it either necessary or convenient to include them. Extensive observations of whiteness are possible and necessary, but I am not up to the task. It's sufficient for the purposes of my work on this site to understand that I approach "white" as a constructed identity, constructed by humans, and that we (people like myself, who are called "white") must abandon, denounce, and abolish this name as a Babylonian project. > Then they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens so *that we may make a name for ourselves.* Otherwise we will be scattered across the face of the entire earth.” > Genesis 11:4 (NASB) (emphasis mine) Colonial powers have made a great name for themselves, and in doing so forsook the name that is above every other name. We who are called white must first create distance from this name we were given ("Do not call me white, call me German") and refuse to take up the privileges a white society gives to those who take up the name. Insisting on our right to be White alienates us from our Christian brothers and sisters, while holding fast to the name above all names, Jesus Christ, will strengthen the bonds of kinship between us.
